One MINUTE/ One NIGHT is a participating exhibition that is part of the Le Flash: Nuit Blanche program that is taking place on October 24, in Castleberry Hill, in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. One MINUTE / One NIGHT is curated by Carolyn Carr and Michael Gibson at Garage Projects. Nuit Blance is organized by Cathy Byrd and Stuart Keeler.

Garage Projects is located in the building Stable 1897. During the One MINUTE/ One NIGHT presentation, Garage Projects' exhibition space will be expanded to includes 5 locations with in and on the building Stable 1897. This will be the first exhibition in the newly configured media driven exhibition space, designed by Nicholas Storck. From this exhibition forward, the programming at Garage Projects will be dedicated to new media and old technology.

One MINUTE/ One NIGHT
Artist curators Carolyn Carr and Michael Gibson offer a special screening of 28 one-minute videos in and around Garage Projects. The only limitation for this international call was for works to be one minute in length. Out of this call came a natural grouping that begged for five independent viewing spaces. This grouping was further governed by the works content, style, and/ or context-- whether in the arrangement of works in various and sometimes improbable exhibition spaces or relationships of works to each other.

Window Box Storefront: A selection of three works which through texture and atmospheric editing relate to early experimental film works of Thomas Edison, Stan Brakage and Ingmar Bergman. Each of these artist delve into narratives that explore the humane psyche as well as, share a common visual approach.

Façade Upstairs Window: Walking down Peters Street pedestrians encounter a moving image in a second story window, in a dark corner of a historic building, that is surreal in nature.

II Garage Projects-- The video calls only stated limitation was that each work was to be 1 minute long. And the randomness out of this loose restriction resulted in a natural communality in content, context and style. The artist being presented here all share everyday mundane affairs by way of waiting, watching and being watched.

The Video Box: A stand alone Monitor inside Garage Projects This work reminds the viewer of the over all happy aura American artists elevated through pop art during the 60s and beyond while examining the issues surrounding the intersection of painting and the moving picture.

Le Flash is Coming!

This fantastical night in Castleberry Hill will feature 30 artist projects—performances and installations, a marching band, the vernissage of a special public art project in Cleopas Park, and fireworks at midnight!

Public Parking Downtown if you must! Available in lots at the intersection of Trinity Ave. and Spring St.

Le Flash Shuttle service is provided every 10 minutes. The route loops from Peters Street at Castleberry Street to Garnett Station, with one stop each way at the Trinity Ave. public parking lot.

Look for Le Flash Shuttle signs or ask volunteers in Yellow Le Flash T-Shirts for directions to Castleberry Hill. From Garnett station, the walk to Castleberry Hill takes 10 minutes.

Where to Find Le Flash Projects

Each site-specific Flash Project has been assigned a number on a Le Flash map to be posted online and available the night of the event.

One Minute/One Night video projects are presented inside and outside Garage Projects, Stable 1897 and Slice. See attached list of participating video artists!

For this night only, Bradberry St. becomes a pedestrian path of performance and light.

When Sustained Attention Impairs Perception

“Virtually all behavioral and neurophysiological studies have shown that sustained (endogenous, conceptually driven) attention enhances perception. But can this enhancement be held indefinitely? We assessed the time course of attention's effects on contrast sensitivity, reasoning that if attention does indeed boost stimulus strength, the strengthened representation could result in stronger adaptation over time. We found that attention initially enhances contrast sensitivity, but that over time sustained attention can actually impair sensitivity to an attended stimulus.”

The above is an excerpt from a paper by Dr. Sam Ling and Dr. Marisa Carrasco of

New York University, I read an article about their research in a scientific journal.

I immediately begin thinking about the idea as it applies to understanding visual language. The body of work I’m currently working borrows its title from this scientific study on attention. When Sustained Attention Impairs Perception is a visual meditation I’ve created on the familiar or what is understood as familiar. I’ve taken photographs of common recognizable objects one sees everyday and created symmetric digital hybrids. I’ve created these objects with the idea of bending perception. The deeper one examines the objects it can be seen that the objects don’t exist at all at least not in the real world.

Each piece or meditation consists of one singular image in a collage, primarily a nine image collage. Again exploring the idea of sustained attention, upon first glance all the images appear to be the same but in fact each will be different. When Sustained Attention Impairs Perception is a body of work about meditation and how we perceive things. My hope is that the piece is understood allegorically and applied to a deeper social understanding of what we think we know.

In the Trees - Justine & Angus

So here is a little movie to give you an idea of what the birds might look like in a tree, at night, with a sample of some bird calls.
The images are not fantastic, but hopefully it shows what the project looks like in an environment closer to its final home.

While we have created more, there are 2 birds featured in this video.
Their sizes range from about 17 inches long to 8 inches.
Bigger birds look like albatrosses or pelicans, which seem a bit ridiculous, so we stuck to these sizes.

The birds are made from :
discarded plastic, bubble wrap, paint, ink, wire, staples. thread, paper (newspaper, magazine, collected photocopies)

We imagine them to be placed around 8 to 16ft up in the trees, unless we can get higher.
At this distance from the ground, details get lost. The glow of the light and the gesture of the marks and materials becomes most interesting.

Luminous Flux

Hi all. Lee here (that's me in the mask in the photo to the left). I'm collaborating with fellow artist, Bubba Carr, to produce a piece for Le Flash called "Luminous Flux". I'm also one of the contributing video artists for the Garage Projects exhibition, ONE MINUTE/ONE NIGHT - so check that out too. I'm sure that Bubba will want to contribute to this blog at some point, but I will be your tour guide this evening.

About us (short version): Bubba is a professional choreographer and dancer. I'm an experimental multi-media artist. Bubba and I decided to create a project together under the guise of an experimental arts collaborative - BUBLEE. For Le Flash, we've designed a performance that will span several blocks of Peters Street and Walker Street. We wanted to bring a sense of contemporary theatre and movement to the audience. As much as I like to blog, I won't go into too much detail here. So in short, we'll have several human fuses at "stations" around the perimeter of the event location, eventually being awakened and joining a procession that leads to an "enlightening" finale. I've included some conceptual images that I've photographed here. Hannah, a friend and one of the performers, is seated on one of our prototype stations. At this point, we know what we're going for conceptually. Now it's more interesting to talk about the process of bringing the production to Le Flash.

One of the best things about staging a performance such as this is getting to design and build the structures, to design the costumes, to cast the performers and workshop the movement. It's all coming together nicely. All of the light structures for the "stations" have been built with very little blood shed and they just need that last coat of black paint. The costumes are still in the design/production phase and we have made the schedule for the first movement workshop. Bubba has dedicated his life to movement and dance, and as the choreographer of the duo, I know he's been itching to get to this part of the project. I am the geek - I like the production stage...designing and making the props, staying up late working out details, working like crazy to stick to schedule...etc. We've both been involved in other projects happening simultaneously with this one. After this weekend, we put everything else down, and go full steam ahead with the final details of our piece.

We can't wait to meet everyone else working on the event. (I say that, even though I'll be the shy one in the corner looking very uncomfortable).

Khadijah Queen and I are collaborating on a performance drawing that is also a moving sound art performance piece. My work explores a continuing interest in sound and the body. In this performance I will become a moving hybrid sound piece by wearing an amp and playing the eletric guitar in an unconventional way- definately as a feminine response to Christian Marclay's "Guitar Drag". Khadijah's performance will include powerful verbal assertions as we react to the live sound being created and words spoken.

In this video(A VERY LOW QUALITY WEB VERSION), I let my feelings dictate the process. Content comes from my experience as a visual entertainer, artists, musician, and teacher. A representation is just a moment, in which I acted, with almost animal instinct. All images are moments, just as any point in space is both the memory of a time, and a reflection of a space. A Special Event of Atlanta Celebrates Photography

This October, Atlanta contemporary artists explore new work with light, performance and space in the Castleberry Hill District, merging the presentation of their creative concepts with an inventive temporary public art project by the Paris-based Ukrainian artist Kristina Solomoukha in nearby Cleopas Johnson Park.

This October 24, for the first time ever, a curatorial vision will bring the unique art of Le Flash to Atlanta’s Castleberry Hill District and nearby Cleopas Park. Cathy Byrd and Stuart Keeler have organized this community-empowered public art event to animate both the neighborhood and the Atlanta cultural community. The project is motivated by the spectacular one-night art events that take place each year in cities around the world: All of Paris lights up with art for Nuit Blanche. Toronto does the same with a night of art revelry and Santa Monica presents Glow from dusk to dawn.

Le Flash will celebrate Atlanta’s creative energy with fantastical art and creative events that illuminate the Castleberry Hill District from 7pm to midnight on Friday, October 24, the evening of Castleberry’s monthly Art Stroll. Free and open to the public, Atlanta’s inaugural Nuit Blanche aims to initiate a yearly celebration of the city and the arts that identifies with the dynamic of the district.

Also elemental to Le Flash will be a special screening of one-minute videos selected from submissions by artists from around the globe. Curated by Castleberry artist residents Carolyn Carr and Michael Gibson, One Minute, One Night will be presented from 7:00pm to midnight at 242 and 243 Peters Street.

A foldout map that shows the way to these and other creative projects will present a schedule for the night’s performance art, dance, theatre, music and video projects.

The signature event for the evening of Le Flash will be the christening of Mind the Gap Fountain a temporary public art project by French artist Kristina Solomoukha in Cleopas Park. Presented by the Welch School Gallery at Georgia State University, with the involvement of the Savannah College of Art & Design-Atlanta, Solomoukha’s transient water feature is made possible by major funding from the French Cultural Services, French Consulate in Atlanta, the French American Fund For Contemporary Art, the Fulton County Arts Council and the Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program. On view from October 24 through December 12, 2008, Solomoukha’s outdoor environment will reflect the evolving dynamic of the park and Atlanta’s contemporary cultural identity.
